Chapter 12

They rode silently through the rest of the night and into the dawn. For a while Andrew closed his eyes and focused on Pecos's strength, trying desperately to touch it. He could see it, he could feel the heat of it, but no matter what, whenever he reached for it, it ran away and he was left with nothing.

When sleep began to lull him under, he asked Pecos to tell him another story. You tell me a story, boy. What? I don't think so. Why not? Um…because my life isn't exciting. In fact, it's pretty dull. If I told you a story, we'd both fall asleep.

What 'bout your leg? What about it? Broken? Oh, well, that wasn't really exciting. It was dumb. That's what it was. Why's that? Andrew sighed. The thing is, I'm not supposed to climb trees. What?! My mom…she worries. If I had any siblings maybe she wouldn't worry so much, but I don't, so. Anyway. Your leg? Right.

Well, I picked the biggest tree in the park, and I climbed it. It was awesome. I mean, I'd never been so high outside of a building. But then… Yeah? It sounds kinda stupid now, but there was this cat. I swear this cat was half puma. Huge, mangy, grey thing. And just all of the sudden, when I was almost to the top, it jumped down at me, claws out, teeth bared, hissing, foaming at the mouth. Andrew was exaggerating just a little, but he didn't want Pecos to think he was anymore of a weenie than he already did.

And… well… I let go. You let go? Yep. I let go, fell, and broke my leg in three places. First thing my mom says after she makes sure I'm alright is "And this is why I told you to never climb trees!" Pecos laughed, and Andrew grinned. Anyway, so that's the story, and the most exciting thing that's ever happened to me. So, you gonna tell me a story or am I gonna fall asleep in the saddle again? Pecos muttered something, but after a moment he said, Did I tell you 'bout the time I met a man who could make it rain?

Pecos told story after story, and Andrew listened intently, wishing his life was even a tiny bit as exciting as Pecos's was. I gotta think now, boy. You keep yourself awake, Pecos said just before dawn. Andrew laughed. Like he could fall asleep after that last story. He shuddered and watched the shadows deepen, wondering if there was anything hiding in them.

As day began to break, they rode through a patch of ground covered in short, scrubby, strong-smelling plants. Andrew was focusing on breathing in time with Dewmint's rhythm, and he inhaled deeply and sneezed. "What's this crap?" he asked Joe between sneezes.

"Sage brush."

"It stinks!" Andrew sneezed again. Hey, Pecos, you got a Kleenex? A what? A Kleenex, you know, to blow your nose on. Hanky's in my pocket. Andrew reached into his pocket and pulled out a red square of cloth.
